Changan is preparing to enter one of South Africa’s most competitive segments with the upcoming UNI-S, a mid-size SUV aimed at taking on some of the market’s established players.
The mid-size SUV category remains one of the busiest spaces locally, with buyers placing increasing focus on performance, features and overall value. Rather than competing purely on price, Changan appears to be positioning the UNI-S as a more rounded offering.
Under the bonnet, the UNI-S is expected to deliver 138kW and 300Nm, placing it in line with some of the stronger performers in the segment. It will also feature a multi-link rear suspension setup, which is typically found in more premium offerings and should contribute to improved ride comfort and handling.

Safety and driver assistance are also a key focus. The UNI-S is set to arrive with a wide range of ADAS features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, blind spot monitoring, collision warning systems and a 540-degree camera system. Features like automatic parking are also expected to be included.
Inside, the focus shifts to comfort and convenience. The SUV will offer features such as a panoramic sunroof with rain-sensing closure, an electric tailgate, and a 12.8-inch infotainment display paired with an eight-speaker sound system. Other details, like side mirrors that tilt when reversing and a Bluetooth phone key, point to a feature set that leans more towards the premium end of the segment.

The UNI-S will be available in three variants when it launches locally, although full specifications and pricing are yet to be confirmed.
With this model, Changan is clearly targeting a segment that does not offer easy wins. Instead, the UNI-S looks set to compete on a mix of performance, technology and overall package, rather than relying on pricing alone.
