MG3 Review: A new underdog

The MG3 is one of those cars that doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not, and that’s actually where its charm lies.
From the outside, it’s youthful. Bright colours, a bold grille, and a slightly cheeky stance make it feel more alive than most entry-level hatches. It doesn’t scream premium, but it also doesn’t look cheap.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine producing 81kW and 142Nm. On paper, it’s fine. On the road, it feels relaxed. This is not a car you rush in. Around town, it’s light, easy to drive, and actually quite enjoyable in a laid-back way. Push it harder, though, and it quickly reminds you it’s not built for that kind of driving.
Inside is where MG plays one of its strongest cards. The cabin feels spacious for the segment, and features like Apple CarPlay help the car feel modern enough for daily driving. The materials are clearly budget-focused, but they’ve been put together well enough not to feel unpleasant.

Ride quality is more than decent, soaking up urban bumps without fuss, while overall usability remains one of the MG3’s strongest qualities. It’s an easy car to live with.
The MG3 isn’t here to excite, it’s here to simplify your life. And for first-time buyers or city commuters, that may be exactly the point. Pricing starts at R269,900.
