Volvo has expanded its electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the all-new ES90, a fully electric sedan that now serves as the brand’s flagship sedan. The ES90 combines long-range electric capability, Scandinavian design, and the latest generation of Volvo technology. We recently spent some time behind the wheel in Durban to see what the Swedish brand’s latest EV brings to the table.
Design
The ES90 is unmistakably a Volvo. Its clean, understated styling follows the brand’s familiar design philosophy, while introducing a more aerodynamic silhouette than traditional luxury sedans. Up front, Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights remain a defining feature, while the rear adopts distinctive vertical LED lighting elements that help the ES90 stand out at night.
Overall, the design feels modern without being overly dramatic, which should appeal to buyers looking for something elegant rather than attention-seeking.
Interior
Step inside and you’ll find a cabin that closely follows Volvo’s minimalist approach. A large portrait-oriented touchscreen dominates the dashboard, running Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system. The interface is intuitive, responsive, and integrates familiar Google services that many users will already be comfortable with.

The rest of the cabin is clean and uncluttered, with very few physical buttons. Premium materials and a panoramic glass roof contribute to the sense of space, while Volvo’s focus on comfort remains evident throughout.
The ES90 also introduces Volvo’s latest computing platform, allowing for regular over-the-air software updates and ongoing improvements throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.
Driving impressions
The South African launch model is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 245kW and 480Nm.
Performance is brisk rather than outright aggressive, with Volvo claiming a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.6 seconds. More importantly, the power delivery is smooth and effortless, making the ES90 exceptionally easy to drive in everyday conditions.
Overtaking requires little effort, while the ride quality leans heavily towards comfort rather than sporty handling. The ES90 feels at its best when covering long distances, quietly isolating occupants from the outside world.
Built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the ES90 uses an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with a 92kWh battery. Volvo claims a driving range of up to 755km on the WLTP cycle, while DC fast charging can take the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 25 minutes.

Final thoughts
Based on our first impressions, the Volvo ES90 feels like a natural evolution of the brand’s luxury sedan formula.
It prioritises comfort, refinement, technology, and efficiency rather than chasing outright performance figures. The minimalist cabin works well, the electric powertrain feels polished, and the impressive claimed range should help ease concerns for buyers considering the switch to electric mobility.
For those looking for a premium electric sedan that focuses on comfort rather than sportiness, the ES90 appears to make a strong first impression.
