The Suzuki Swift has been giving the likes of the VW Polo Vivo sleepless nights — especially on the sales front — as it’s currently the second-best-selling passenger vehicle in Mzansi. The new Swift continues to hustle hard in the streets, proving itself to be a solid value-for-money option. We got behind the wheel of the 1.2 GLX manual model, which sits just one step below the range-topping CVT, and here’s what we thought.
Design
We’re not saying the previous Swift was ugly, but let’s just say the new one came back from summer holidays with a fresh haircut and new tekkies. It’s sharp. With auto LED headlights, daytime running lights, LED taillights, and 15-inch alloy wheels, the GLX is definitely showing up looking the part. It even puts some of its own siblings to shame.
Interior
Step inside and it’s all about practicality with just enough tech to keep your younger cousins impressed. You get a 9-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electric windows all round, and 265 litres of boot space — perfect for your Woolies haul or a weekend away with the squad. Fold the seats down and you get a massive 589 litres. Sure, there’s some plastic here and there, but at this price, complaining about that is like moaning about pap being too soft — it still slaps.

Under the hood
Under the bonnet is a plucky 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine pushing out 60kW and 112Nm — not exactly a beast, but definitely not shy either. It’s paired with a five-speed manual gearbox that keeps things engaging. Around town, you’ll be dancing on the clutch a bit, but on the open road, it holds its own — just keep the revs up and don’t be shy with your right foot. We managed a decent 5.4 L/100 km even with some voet-in-die-hoek driving. And thanks to the thick tyres, it handles Joburg potholes like a champ.
Safety
No skimping here — the GLX comes fully loaded with six airbags (front, side, and curtain), ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Programme, and rear ISOFIX anchors.

Verdict
In a country where fuel is more expensive than avo on toast and every rand counts, the Suzuki Swift GLX MT is a breath of fresh air. It’s not the fastest, flashiest, or most powerful, but it’s reliable, efficient, and packed with features that punch well above its price tag. In a market dominated by badge snobs and overpriced Germans, the Swift is that humble friend who always comes through — dependable, fun, and light on the pocket. The Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX MT is priced at R271,900.
