Toyota South Africa Motors has simplified its Corolla hatchback and sedan range as part of a broader line-up rationalisation aligned with changing customer preferences and market demand.
With immediate effect, both the Corolla Hatchback and Corolla Sedan will be offered exclusively in a single derivative, the 1.8-litre Hybrid Electric Vehicle XR grade. As part of this update, the XS HEV derivatives and XR 2.0-litre internal combustion engine models have been discontinued.
The decision reflects declining demand in the traditional hatchback and sedan segments, alongside a wider industry shift towards electrified powertrains. By consolidating the range around the 1.8-litre HEV XR, Toyota continues to prioritise efficiency, reduced emissions and future-focused mobility, while retaining the quality, durability and reliability long associated with the Corolla name.
Now in its 12th generation, the Corolla is one of the most established nameplates in the global automotive industry, with more than 50 million units sold worldwide since its introduction in 1966. Originally launched as a compact sedan, the model has evolved over the decades to meet changing customer needs across different markets.

In South Africa, the Corolla’s evolution included the introduction of the Corolla Hatchback in 2018, replacing earlier models such as the Conquest, RUN X and Auris. This was followed by the launch of the Corolla Cross in 2021, which expanded the nameplate into the compact SUV segment.
The Corolla Cross has played a key role in strengthening the model’s local presence, earning multiple honours at the 2022 South African Car of the Year Awards, including overall Car of the Year, as well as category wins in the Compact Family and New Energy segments.
The Corolla also holds a notable place in South African motoring history. The first front-wheel-drive Corolla secured the inaugural South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Car of the Year award in 1986, with the GLi Twin Cam 16 Executive repeating the achievement in 1989.
Today, the Corolla name continues to span multiple segments, from the performance-focused GR Corolla to the family-oriented Corolla Cross. With the hatchback and sedan ranges now streamlined to hybrid-only offerings, Toyota’s strategy places a clear focus on electrified mobility within the Corolla line-up.
