Changan Alsvin 1.5 CE Review: Simple, affordable and sensible

The Changan Alsvin 1.5 CE enters the market with a clear objective: to offer maximum value at a price point that undercuts much of the competition. In a segment where affordability often comes at the cost of refinement or equipment, the Alsvin attempts to rewrite the equation.

On the road, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine paired with an automatic transmission delivers exactly what most urban drivers are looking for: simplicity. Acceleration is modest but adequate for city driving, and the automatic gearbox keeps things smooth in traffic. It’s not a performance-focused sedan, nor does it pretend to be. Instead, it prioritises ease of use and predictability.

Ride quality is comfortable over typical city surfaces, absorbing minor imperfections without drama. Steering is light, which makes parking and tight manoeuvres effortless. On the highway, the Alsvin feels stable, although you are reminded of its budget positioning when pushing beyond relaxed cruising speeds or through unexpected hairpin bends. Still, for its intended audience, daily commuters and first-time buyers, it does the job competently.

Inside, the Alsvin presents better than its price tag might suggest. The cabin design is modern, with a clean dashboard layout and a touchscreen infotainment system that feels current. Materials are largely hard plastics, but assembly feels solid. The CE trim offers respectable equipment levels, giving buyers the essentials without feeling stripped down.

Practicality is another strong point. Rear legroom is decent for the segment, and the boot space is suitable for everyday needs. The overall driving experience is unintimidating, which makes it especially appealing to newer drivers or those upgrading from smaller hatchbacks.

Fuel consumption remains reasonable, as we averaged 6.3L/100km, and it keeps ownership costs manageable. In this segment, that matters more than headline power figures.

The Alsvin’s biggest strength is its clarity of purpose. It doesn’t try to be premium. It doesn’t oversell sportiness. Instead, it focuses on affordability, usability and low running costs.

At R271,200, the Changan Alsvin 1.5 CE is a sensible, value-driven compact sedan that delivers what it promises. It offers straightforward, accessible motoring at a competitive price. For buyers who prioritise practicality and price over prestige, it makes a compelling case.
