BYD Shark 6: A bold new wave in the bakkie segment

The South African bakkie market is one of the toughest proving grounds for any new vehicle. Buyers in this segment value durability, practicality, towing ability, and reliability above almost everything else. Entering that space with a plug-in hybrid powertrain is therefore a bold move.

The BYD Shark 6 aims to challenge convention by combining traditional double-cab practicality with electrified performance and modern technology. More importantly, it introduces something genuinely different to a segment that has remained relatively unchanged for years.

    A bold first impression

There is no mistaking the BYD Shark 6 when it comes down the road. Its bold styling and distinctive presence ensure it stands out from the crowd.

Exterior highlights include full LED headlights and taillights, prominent BYD lettering integrated into the grille, side steps, a sports bar, and an easy-lift tailgate that adds to the vehicle’s practicality.

    Technology meets practicality

Inside, the Shark 6 features a familiar BYD cabin layout that is spacious, modern, and well equipped. The centrepiece is a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Other notable features include a digital instrument cluster, heated and ventilated seats, and a premium 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

The cabin strikes a good balance between technology and usability, while offering enough space to make long journeys comfortable for both driver and passengers.

    Putting the power down

Powering the Shark 6 is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with electric motors, producing a combined 321kW and 650Nm. Energy is supplied by BYD’s 29.58kWh Blade Battery, which offers a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 85km.

Performance is impressive, with the large bakkie capable of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in a claimed 5.7 seconds.

On the road, the hybrid powertrain delivers strong and immediate acceleration, particularly from a standstill where the electric assistance is most noticeable. Despite its size, the Shark 6 offers a comfortable ride and surprisingly composed handling, making it easy to drive both around town and on the open road.

    Verdict

The BYD Shark 6 represents a fresh approach to the bakkie segment. It combines eye-catching styling, a technology-rich cabin, strong performance, and the benefits of plug-in hybrid efficiency in a package unlike anything else currently available in South Africa.

At R959,900, it presents a compelling alternative to traditional diesel-powered double cabs while offering a glimpse into what the future of the bakkie segment could look like.
