The arrival of the BYD Sealion 6 adds another strong contender to South Africa’s growing new-energy vehicle market. This plug-in hybrid SUV combines modern technology, practicality, and impressive efficiency in a package that is easy to recommend.
The Sealion 6 features clean, conservative styling, complemented by 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, and a bold front grille. Inside, the cabin feels premium for the price, offering faux-leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and BYD’s impressive 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen. There’s also enough room for five adults, along with 425 litres of boot space.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 160kW and 300Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds. Performance is smooth rather than sporty, but the ride quality and handling make it a comfortable and capable daily driver.
BYD claims up to 92km of electric driving range for the Premium AWD, although we managed around 70km in real-world conditions. Fuel consumption also proved impressive, returning 5.2L/100km during city driving, comfortably better than BYD’s claimed figure of 5.8L/100km. A claimed combined driving range of up to 1,092km further enhances its appeal.

Pricing starts at R639,900 for the Sealion 6 range, while the Premium AWD derivative is priced from R789,900.
Verdict
The Sealion 6 delivers where it matters most. It’s comfortable, well equipped, practical, and remarkably efficient. While it won’t thrill performance enthusiasts, it offers excellent value for buyers looking to make the move into plug-in hybrid motoring.
